Language is the heart of community

About Us

We shared a desire to see and hear more Indigenous languages in public places, and wanted more people to be able to learn and share. So this is our invitation to neighbours, friends and communities to learn with us and connect through programs, technology and initiatives in the public realm.

Our Journey

In 2019, as part of the Winnipeg Trails Healing Trails program and, later, as part of the Speech Act project with Urban Shaman, we started a journey that would see us translate and record 1000s of phrases, words, and stories from languages spoken in and around Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Our goal is to see these languages be used and embedded into the landscape. We want the ancestral languages of our land to be seen and heard.

In 2020, we began forming the idea for an app that would let you learn languages as you moved around. Thanks to a strong partnership between two like-minded organizations (Winnipeg Trails and Urban Shaman), and generous funding from Canadian Heritage, we are making this dream come true.

Thank you to all those who made this project possible.
